Artist’s Statement

Creativity is the wheel that goes round and round. Spoked by all of the senses, the obvious five as well the more subtle somatic inklings of gut and knowing. Creativity, the act of making and manifesting, is a way of life, a way of being, not necessarily a choice yet constantly choosing. This is reflected back to me as gardening, as cooking, as designing and of course painting.

Why do I need to paint landscapes? I’ve concluded that the landscape is a way I sense time, a way I sense antiquity, ancestry and voices that have come before and of course the voice of the present. In a more tangible way landscape offers the opportunity to marvel at structure from the immense to the minute, patterns repeat themselves like a language. My cycle of painting begins as an urge, I’m called, I’m pulled by this language that travels through me to become painting, then a painting. The wheel is closed, the cycle completed when the painting, drawing, collage or other is seen by another. I see the sharing of art as completing the creative cycle, the viewer has a role in the process.
